Can the leather coating be used on a vinyl convertible top?

You know that is an EXCELLENT question, and I would not see why not (and I would probably use it myself) but I am subbing to see what Corey will reply.

I know the other fabric and leather coating that was applied with a heat gun was able to be put on convertible tops. Just want to be sure before I do it on a customers car. If it were my own I would do it either way just to test.

Well, the new CQuartz Leather is actually "CQuartz Leather and Vinyl", so my assumption is that once cured on the vinyl top that it should be resistance to what ever life throws at it similar to what we see on the inside. I've applied it to leather and vinyl on interior and it worked like a charm. I would not have a single reason not to apply it to the convertible top. A good cleaning and you are good to go :)

Thanks. My only concern is the texture and consumption of product. I probably will attempt it. Will try to document it well and post my results.

That's awesome! From my experience a 30ml bottle covered 2 bucket seats, 1 bench, center console and door inserts of a F150 with little product to spare. I am sure you have a solid 3 layers on your vinyl top. Texture concerns = NONE! Even on perforated seats I did not see a consumption spike.

Thanks. Good to know. Will post a follow up after I get it coated and all.

I plan on coating the top today. What process do you think I should take to coat this top? Do exactly what you would for the normal leather or do you think I should allow for it to cure fully on the top?

Here is a picture of the top that I am working with.

Directions:

  1. Thoroughly clean all dirt, moisture, and oils from surface with non-oily, interior safe cleaner - (Recommended Ultima Interior Shampoo Gel)
  2. Wipe with a water damp towel to remove residue from your cleaner if needed
  3. Pour at least 10 drops or one small strip onto the suede wrapped applicator
  4. Work CQuartz Leather & Vinyl into the surface including all creases, and texture
  5. Gently wipe off any excess within 2-3 minutes
  6. May layer after 30 minutes from start of the first application
  7. Touch dry after 10 min / Avoid water for 4 hours / Fully cured at 3 days

This is the technique I used and instructions provided, so I would assume you should follow the same to get a good layering and proper bonding between layers

Thanks, I applied the coating and it worked wonderfully. I will post the documentation write up for it in the next couple of days. The customer was very happy with the results.

I wonder after the coating has been completely cured, can I top it off with another protectant such as Ultima Interior Guard Plus which gives the silky smooth touch feeling and may be a bit more protection?

The coating actually prevents the adherence of any products, including waxes, pen ink, dye etc... to the leather so any protectant will be repelled to your pants ;)

Haha, yeah, that is a very good point. I think even if the protectant sticks to it, the protectant durability will be no more than just a few days or few weeks. In that sense, the protectant is like a quick detailer amp up that silky smooth slickness in the seats to glide in and out. I still like that Ultima Interior Guard Plus feel.

Thanks for the detailed documentation and my sincere apologies for not seeing the thread sooner! U would have said proceed at your own risk as I wasn't sure how easy it would be to apply evenly on this particular material but it appears you did an excellent job! I was surprised at the lack of beading after the first coat but interested in the difference with subsequent coats. It appears the first soaked right in

The first video was before the first coat, showing how the water reacted before any treatment was done. It was surprisingly very easy to apply and was both the customer and myself were very pleased with the results.
