CQuartz - UK 3.0 2nd coat?

I have used several ceramic coatings and do detailing as a hobby for a few friends. I just coated my brand new Corvette with UK - 3.0. Even though brand new, I did a level 1 correction as most new cars come from the factory with at least a few flaws. I have enough 3.0 left over to do 2 more Corvettes, but I only have one other. Since this is my first experience with CQuartz, I thought I'd reach out in the hope someone has experience with this product regarding layer/no layer. I won't keep the excess as I'm sure it has a shelf life after opening. Before I throw away or use on my PWC, would there be any pro's doing a 2nd coat on my new car? Some products have diminishing returns by layering, some have a minor positive. I sent an e-mail asking about this to Car Pro, but hoping someone here has some insight. I just joined this forum and this is my first post.

Welcome to the forum! Would love to see this new vette of yours, they are beautiful cars! I have known some individuals to do 3 coats of CQ and not have issues. Do you get 3x the protection? No. Do you get 3x the gloss? No. I think they only do that to use up the bottle but that's just my theory. I would be more concerned with its removal and keeping it dry and cured properly. Others will chime in soon enough though.

Welcome to the forum.

It is perfectly fine to put a second coat over the first coat. Just be sure to allow at a minimum 45 min to 1 hour. It will ensure even coverage but in my opinion adds a little more gloss. You can also use it to protect the wheels.

CarPro actually recommends 2 coats. Per the product description page

  • Wrap a 4" mf Suede around the grey side of applicator block.
  • Shake CQuartz UK.
  • Slowly open bottle and drag one or two lines of product down the applicator.
  • Spread across paint in a criss cross pattern approximately 2 sq ft at a time depending on conditions.
  • Buff off as soon as it flashes (within 2-5 minutes depending - see tips above) using a CarPro No Lint Ultra Towel 16" x 16".
  • Be sure to remove all excess residue and only then do you move to the next section.
  • Switch out the 4" Suedes every 2+/- panels.
  • Additional coats may be applied with 45-60 minutes or wait until the following day if you are beyond 60 minutes. CarPro recommends 2 coats. Max Layer - 3 coats.
  • Apply Reload after final coat within 30- 60 mins. Wait until next day for Reload if you miss the 30-60 minute window or at least a minimum of 12 hrs.

Guz- Thanks for the reply. I did not pick up the 2nd coat note in the instructions. I used another product on one of my other cars and used the same on the wheels. Corvettes are famous for brake dust, so I'll coat these wheels with the UK 3.0. The ease of the application was a breeze. The car is garaged and driven about 3.5k miles/yr., so I think the coating will last past the expected life. I'll probably re-apply long before the endpoint as I enjoy keeping the cars in excellent shape. The wheels are polished chrome- do you think I should do an IPA wipedown before coating - the car is fresh from the factory, so there has been no wax applied.

TripleX - thanks for the reply. I think I will go with 2x coats. Nothing to lose since the 2nd coat doesn't appear to diminish the positives of coating. I just joined this forum today and I'm glad I did. I belong to a couple of other forums additionally.

At a minimum besides a good cleaning and possibly even an iron remover, a prep wipe would be all you would need prior to coating them. If you want to add a little more gloss you can polish them with the same polish you used for the paint.

Thanks again. I got the 2nd coat on the paint. The little I have remaining should take care of the wheels. If I run just a little short, I have some material I used to coat my other car. Since ceramic coating, the car doesn't necessarily need washing after getting caught in the rain, but the wheels need cleaning. Thanks again.

Rsurfer: I put the 2nd coat on my new car approx. 30 hours after the 1st coat w/no issues. Today, there was a post on Corvette Forum - OP had applied 2nd coat several days after applying 2nd coat and he had all kinds of issues. Reading the post, it seems the problem was more technique related vs. an issue applying a 2nd coat over a "cured coat". I can only respond to my experience applying 2nd coat after 30 hours, but based on my results, I would not think there would be an issue applying a 2nd coat after several days. You could probably e-mail Car Pro, but I e-mailed them with a question before I applied my UK 3.0 and did not receive a reply, but maybe you may have better luck getting a response.

Not sure who exactly is asking this question, but there shouldn't be an issue. Its recommended to put the coat on after an hour. But as long as the car stays clean, the other layers can be applied later. Im assuming that during the 30 hours the car was garage kept. If you do have to drive your car and then want to add a second coat. We recommend waiting 5 days, doing a wash, Decon, and then eraser on the car, and then put the second coat on. And It is odd that we didn't respond to an email, especially if it was a product question. It is unlikely that we don't respond to product questions emails same day. If they want to try again feel free to shoot us an email [email protected].
