Polisher backing and pads

Is there an average size polishing pad that is used? The sizes range from 3-7 or even 8 inches. It almost sounds like 5 and 6 is the most commonly used. I have a 7inch. So now i am thinking i should get a smaller backing plate and polishing pads. Would you recommend goong with the 5? Or sticking with the 7 inch is ok.

Which polisher do you have? Big flat panels 6 inch is fine but I think most of us use 5.5 inch pads and a 5 inch plate. It makes the polisher a little more effective and also fits into, and polishes tighter spots.
 
I have a drill master. Ok i will get a 5 inch plate

You can probably continue with the 7 inch pads on big flat hoods, doors, and roofs as long as you are getting the results you are looking for. So don't go throwing out everything you have.

Could i use a 6inch pad on a 5 inch back plate?

You physically can and it probably will stay on there, but I feel that you can't apply solid pressure as well when tackling more sever defects if your pad has that much over hang on the backing plate. I've tried it before and it's just a bad feel. Someone else may be able to chime in with an actual reason why it may be bad but that's how I feel about it.

My machines...
Flex 3401- 6" pads
Rupes Mark II 15- 5" pads
Porter Cable 7424 and Flex Kompakt- 1-3" pads

Also, I like to stay with in the engineered specs with pads and backing plates to ensure best outcome, as PWP referenced in last post.

My above is based on each correction and vehicle contour...;)
