For the past few years, I have been applying my tire dressing with an air gun. It works amazingly well and I have been asked repeatedly about what air gun I use, what product, etc. I had been asked recently to do a video showing the method. Well, now that my detailing season is done for the year I had time to do it today. How did I start doing it this way? To give credit where credit is due, Chris Thomas from Optimum first turned my onto this. They of course have their own Optimum gun that they'll sell you for like $50. I found one that works well for less than $20.

So what do you need to have to use this method?
1) Air Compressor
2) Suitable Air gun (I detail that in the video)
3) Tire Dressing
4) Tire Dressing foam applicator (to even it out or level it)

Here is the exact same gun that I bought at Princess Auto in Canada. They no longer sell it. I have however found it listed on ebay. Here is a listing for one currently for sale by a seller called Winning Choice:

You can experiment with the settings on the gun for the flow or volume you shoot out as well as how close to the tire you hold it. The further away you are increases the risk of getting overspray onto the wheel. In the video I say that I use Opti Bond at 100% (not cut at all). I really like it that way. I was using Duragloss Wet Shine prior to that. I could dial back the volume on the gun for it as it was a more watery consistency vs the thick consistency of the OB. I did find however that the DG would make a bit of a cloud while shooting it...especially if you shoot the wheel wells as well.

Anyway, I've tried to preemptively answer the questions I usually get when I mention this method, but feel free to ask if the above information and the video don't clarify things. Enjoy...

Richy,

I'm not familiar with the product you mentioned in the video. How would you compare the thickness between the one you used and PEARL?

Thanks,

Steve

Richy great writeup and video. Have you ever shot DLUX out of that particular gun.

NICE!! Do you find product waste using this method?? or do you have overspray on the rims??

Great write up Richy.
Thanks very much!

Opti Bond is Optimum's tire dressing. It is quite thick actually, kinda like a gel. I don't find it mixes well so I prefer to use it straight. PERL is very watery by comparison. You'd have 2 very different settings for the jet when using both.

Claude, on the contrary, I think you actually use less product. As far as overspray, a lower psi on the regulator helps eliminate that as well as not being too far away when shooting it.
