Engine Bay Detailing

What is the Safest and preferred method to degrease and clean the engine bay? Equipment and cleaning product recommendation? I primarily do maintenance mobile detailing and very rarely do I get asked to do the engine bay. I would like to offer it, but only if I have a solid routine down. Thanks!

I would advise on taking your time and cover every electrical connection on the engine bay as best as you can.

What kind of detail gear you own?, a steamer maybe?

Sometimes, lost of elbow grease and patience gets the job done!

I was wondering this also and would certainly appreciate any recommendations.

I currently use Simple Green Pro HD concentrate (mixed 3 parts water, 1 part HD) and it seems to work fine.

However, I'm far from a professional detailer...just an overly crazy DIYer.

I have researched this and have many "trial methods" under my belt..I recommend covering alternator and liberally spraying a quality degreaser in the engine bay. Let it dwell for a couple minutes and then use a quality detail brush and agitate all areas concentrating on the heavily soiled spots. Then liberally spray a rinseless wash mix and again agitate. Then use some microfiber towels that have been delegated to engine bay cleaning and get it dry and clean. Now use a quality rubber/plastic dressing (like PERL)and dress appropriate areas. SONUS MOTORKOTE is also very nice for engine bay cleaning. This method is the safest in my opinion since copious amounts of water are not being introduced to the engine's electrical components.

Now for heavily soiled engine bags...a pressure rinse to start would be logical as long as appropriate precautions are adhered to.

I avoid "spraying" the bay with water. I have taken the degreaser approach, soft brush, then use the "mist" setting on a spray head to remove soil. Blot dry, spray with Megs HD, close hood and start the vehicle to dry.
