How To Wax your Car's Paint?

If you are reading this article its probably because you are trying to wax your car for the first time or you just want to ingest some knowledge about auto detailing. Either way you are in the right place to learn about how to properly wax your car. First thing I am going to tell you is that you are going to need quite a bit of time to actually do this correctly. First step in waxing your car is giving it a good wash. Now don't even think about putting your car through the car wash. You can just wash it your self, and you can even check our some of our other blogs to learn how to properly wash your car. After you have properly washed your vehicle you are going to need to perform a claybar treatment to your vehicle. The claybar treatment is going to insure to provide a good surface for the wax to bond with the paint.

After this you are going to have to get your self a nice paste wax. We recommend brands like Meguiars, or Jescar. You can also get your self a nice wax at your local auto parts store and it wont cost you much. The wax will typically last anywhere from 2-3 months and make sure to pick one with a good amount of gloss to insure that you get the best results for your vehicle. Once you have gotten your wax of choice you are going to need, some nice plush microfiber towels, and a wax applicator. You will start to apply the wax on to the car panel by panel, you will grab your paste wax and apply a few drop to the applicator pad and apply it to the car in circular motions. After you have applied the wax to all of your paint you will wait about 5-15 minutes depending on the product you are using and buff it off. Once you have buffed off your wax with a microfiber towel you should have a nice shiny car ready to hit the road again.

Here are the basic steps for waxing a car's paint:

Wash the car thoroughly to remove any dirt or debris from the surface.

Dry the car with a clean microfiber towel or chamois to prevent water spots.

Apply a small amount of wax to a foam applicator pad or a clean microfiber towel.

Work in small sections, applying the wax in a circular motion.

Allow the wax to dry to a haze, then buff it off with a clean microfiber towel.

Repeat the process for the entire car, making sure to work in small sections and buffing each section before moving on to the next.

Finally, apply a quick detailer or spray wax to give the car a final shine and to remove any remaining wax residue.

Note:

Always read the manufacturer's instructions before using any products.
Avoid waxing in direct sunlight, as the heat can cause the wax to dry too quickly and leave streaks.
It's best to use a high-quality carnauba wax for best results.
 
Apply a thin coat of wax, let it haze, then buff with a microfiber. From my experience with car detailing in Richmond VA, less product gives a better shine.
 
There are many different types of car wax. I use different waxes for different results.

For example, there are WOWO (Wipe On Wipe Off) Do not let it haze waxes.
Sone waxes, if you let it haze, it will be like trying to remove cement.
For these WOWO waxes you would only do one section at a time (fender, door etc.)

Some waxes are designed for a particular paint colors black, white etc. are totally different.
For black I prefer a wax that has a warm glow, depth, and looks like a pool of calm water.
For white I prefer a wax that is bright, shiny, looks high gloss and has a brilliant sparkle.

Then there's the durability and longevity factor.
Some waxes look concours classy but only last a few days, others can last the winter months.

In almost all cases you should use the two coat method.
This is not so you use more products or thicker application.
If you apply the first coat thick you will wipe off most of the wax during removal.
Apply the first coat thin. After removal apply a second coat to "build" on the first coat.


In short, there's the look, the longevity and ease of application and removal.
