Single Stage vs Modern Paint

Looking for some guidance on SS paint. I am guessing I am going to run into SS paint, and need to know if there needs to be any additional steps/precautions taken? I have polished plenty of cars, but never SS paint.. Still need to get more info from the owner because he is wanting touch up paint as well.

Here is what I am working on this week -- would appreciate some advice! Thanks everyone!

Nice, nice, and nice!!! :):) For the most part you have a similar situation to clear other than the obvious. Still you start with least aggressive and work up.

Now... When it comes to coatings they may or may not be the best answer. Every coating on the market will tell you (if they are honest) that there is no guarantee with coating single stage. It's more porous and also paint types vary a lot. Having said that we've seen some crazy cool results with UK but it's wise to know and share this info as needed.

When coating ss paint you will find CQuartz generally flashes much faster.

Looking forward to additional tips from others to ss in general.

Thanks for the advice! Any recommendations for the white roof? Its a hard material, not soft what so ever. I was thinking a mild APC and a brush and seeing how that works.

I'm thinking I would start with Ultima Interior Shampoo Gel on it for starters (with brush) and if that doesn't do it go to Sonus all in one and finally p21s but I would do test spots carefully as I go. I MIGHT protect with Dlux but definitely would want to test a small corner for a month first. Maybe stick with Perl up there.

For metalwork get the Sonus if you don't have something good already. http://www.carpro-us.com/sonus-chrome-polish-16-oz/

Corey, I used to use the "pink" stuff back in the day (my all time favorite). A couple years ago when I ordered more, it showed up and was "purple". What I've noticed is the purple stuff is MUCH thinner than the old school pink. The purple does work well, but I find myself using much more of it because it's so much thinner. I have about 4-5oz of the pink I save for special occasions...:D I'm definitely going with Sonus next time.

b0b, I have always worked SS paint the same as I work BC/CC paint. As to the coating of SS paint; I have only coated it twice, and I am 50/50 on that. The coating failed prematurely on one, and worked as expected on the other...:dunno:

Ok, the white roof on the Blue Chevelle is not coming all the way clean. Can I use a polisher on this to get some of the more stubborn spots out? I am going to try and use my steamer too but am not expecting too great of results...

I have the brush that I could use on a Porter Cable, so I didnt know if that would be a good option or not... It is really hard plastic, but I dont want to take the paint off either....

I have tried soap with brushes and kept moving up to 4:1 APC... It worked but not 100% at all....

Bob, I messaged Chad Rasky about this since I thought he might have some input and I wasn't 100% if I would recommend that or not.

Here's what Chad said,

"It's a vinyl roof so it should be pretty durable as long as it's not dried out, sun baked, and or cracking. I'd personally tackle it like I would a vinyl boat seat. An upholstery brush on a PC should be fine, just not on speed 6 (use common sense) and as I mentioned above, as long as the vinyl isn't sun baked. If it is the original roof proceed with extreme caution.

Just my $.02 :)"

So, if it was me I would go for it but note- do so at your own risk!

If there is no give to the top at all under your finger it is dried out. Use the brush on your pc, if it does not appear to be clean,it is my experience that the dirty look is the color worn off. Re dying is the solution. As for coating SS paint,I never do. Those cars are not in the elements so durable protection is not the goal. A product such as ion would be great. Plus a sealant or a wax would fill any defects that cannot be removed. Be carefull on the edges!
